  4. This is to emulate the Macintosh System Folder CDEV/INIT type
  5. of setup. (Hey, don't knock it. Its a good Idea.)
  6. You see, there are a lot of inexperienced (and experienced)
  7. people out there who simply don't want to muck about with
  8. !Boot files. Or don't have time.
  9. Just set your system to autoboot from this drive. For the
  10. inexperienced do this by:
  11.  
  12.     *Configure boot
  13.     *OTP 4,3
  14.     *Configure FileSystem ( your file system eg ADFS, SCSI etc. )
  15.     *Configure Drive      ( drive to boot from eg. 4)
  16.  
  17.     Make sure that !Boot is in the root directory.
  18.  
  19. The first time !Boot is run, It will run all the programs in the "Run"
  20. sub-directory, and run the !Boot file of all the Applications in the
  21. "Boot" sub-directory. This happens when the program runs by autobooting.
  22. If you click on the application from the desktop, then it will open up
  23. the "Run" and "Boot" directorys. All you have to do is drag the applications
  24. that you want into the directorys.
  25. Note that it will run anything (basic, obey, application) from the "Run"
  26. directory, but can only work on applications in "Boot".
  27. Alternatively, If you want to "Boot" an application, but don't want the whole
  28. application in the directory, you can create a Soft-Link (using !Links -
  29. provided) of the !Boot file inside the application and put it in the "Run"
  30. directory.
  31. !Boot is transient, so it releases all the memory it uses after booting
  32. is finished.

  34. If you want to test your setup without autobooting, then run the !Go obey
  35. file in the !Boot directory.

  39. !Boot is only really useful when installed on a hard drive.
  40. Put !System in "Run" or "Boot" and it will be "Seen" every startup.
  41. If !Edit, !Paint !Draw or many other frequently used editor programs
  42. are put in the "Boot" directory, then your system will always know where
  43. to find them if you click on a text, sprite, etc. file.
  44. If you have any utilities that you always use, then put them in the "Run"
  45. directory, and they will all be automatically installed on startup. One
  46. of my favorites (!SetDir) is included. Great program Guttorm! Love the
  47. big and small overscan modes! Other favorite programs might be !Sticky,
  48. !Largeness, or even !Usage.

  50. Hint:
  51. If you want programs to be "Seen" but don't want to drag the whole
  52. application into the !Boot directory, make a soft-link of it's !Boot file
  53. and put it in the "Run" directory.

  58. Don't put a plain directory in. !Boot will hate it.
  59. No checking is made to see if what is in "Boot" is an application with a 
  60. !Boot file. It just tries it anyway. Errors generated are non-fatal.
  61. The excecution order is alphabetical, starting in "Boot", so if you get a
  62. "No run action specified for this file-type" then the application that 
  63. belongs to the file hasn't been booted or run yet.
